| Upsurge of wind power |
Wind generating facilities with a total capacity of 883 megawatts were erected in Germany in the first half of 2006 alone - 73% more than in the prior year. The wind generating facilities in Germany have a total capacity of approximately 19,300 megawatts and can produce an average of 35.4 TW hours of electricity per year. (As of July 2006.) In 2005, wind power was already covering 5% of Germany’s gross electricity consumption. |
| Wind becomes competitive |
Technological progress and the strategic political promotion of wind power have turned wind generating facilities into especially economical electricity producers. A modern, 2,000 kilowatt wind generating facility - assuming it runs for 20 years - can generate electricity for an average of 6.4 cents per kilowatt hour; in windy locations such as along the coast, the rate drops even further to just 4.5 cents per kilowatt hour. |
